Still, one of the biggest issues is whether you want a new or second hand left handed electric or acoustic guitar as there just isn’t the choice available that there is for right handed models. As a result, some guitarists reckon that if you haven’t started playing yet, it might be better to actually begin with a right handed guitar so that you won’t have to worry about the choice factor later in life. You won’t have to contend with issues such as most tablature and music being presented in a form for right-handers.

Others suggest that you should simply play a right handed guitar that is strung in reverse, the bass being on top. They may omit the fact that this type of set-up in very prone to losing its tuning because of the effects on the guitar neck’s tension. You could also just turn a standard guitar upside down, but this again has implications on tablature and learning methods.

So you might be thinking, why not just play a genuine left handed guitar that was manufactured for left handed players? Well, apart from the fact that you might find it difficult to find a good teacher, there is no reason why you shouldn’t! After all, there is nothing stopping you teaching yourself!

While; if you are prepared to spend good money, there is a decent choice of models available via the internet especially, getting one cheaply might be a little trickier. Although you many find them available online, the problem – if you’ve never played before – is knowing whether a left handed is truly what you want. Does it feel right and is it more natural to you than a standard guitar? Every guitar is subtly different to the next and so you only ever really know what is right after having it in your hands or hearing its tone. Saying that; if you are beginner, and you are looking at cheap guitars, you probably won’t be too bothered by those subtle differences.

If possible, it is recommended to go to a local shop to just get a feel of a left-handed guitar. If you are really lucky you might find something that you like, if not you will at least be more educated and better able to discern the guitars available online.

So overall, there is no need to be disillusioned if you are a potential left-handed guitarist. They are available; you simply may have to look a bit harder if you are picky. But if you are buying a cheap guitar, why not just make it your aim to have fun playing and learning? There will always be something better and more expensive available once you’ve mastered the basics and made sure that you are in it for the long-term.
